NAIDOC Week 5-12 July: ‘Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth’

30 June 2009, 1:36pm

What is NAIDOC week?

NAIDOC Week celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ history, culture and achievements. It is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. NAIDOC events are held all around Australia each July.

Each year, a different city hosts the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony and Ball. The NAIDOC Awards recognise the outstanding contributions Indigenous Australians make to the community. The National NAIDOC Poster Competition is a chance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to showcase their work across Australia. The 2009 winner is Luke Mallie from Queensland.

NAIDOC originally stood for the 'National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee', which first met in 1957.

Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth

The NAIDOC 2009 Theme is ‘Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth’, and the national host city is Brisbane. The Awards Ceremony and Ball will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday, 10 July 2009 (Tickets have already sold out). Award nominations have now closed.
