CPSU farewells Northern Territory Regional Director and announces replacement

20 November 2008, 7:10am
Naomi Porrovecchio and Paul Morris Naomi Porrovecchio and Paul Morris

The CPSU has a new face in Darwin, with Paul Morris taking over from Naomi Porrovecchio today, as CPSU Regional Director.

Paul began working with the CPSU in Sydney in 2005. He became a lead organiser in the union’s Communications and Science division in 2006.

In his time with the CPSU Paul has led campaigns for better pay and conditions in Telstra, SBS and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. He also helped form the Commercial Television Guild.

Prior to working with the CPSU Paul worked in the private sector, in local government and with the Australian Services Union (ASU). In 2003 he was awarded NSW Organiser of the Year by Unions NSW for his work with the ASU.

The CPSU is also bidding a fond farewell to Naomi Porrovecchio after a very successful career with the union and in the public service.

Naomi started work in the public sector in 1993, and became a deputy CPSU delegate for her workplace shortly after that. She became the union delegate in 1994 and continued in that role in various departments until she left to work as a CPSU organiser in 2004.

In 2006 Naomi became the NT Regional Director. She has negotiated several agreements for the union, the biggest one being the NTPS Union Collective Agreement in 2007, which was achieved while simultaneously running the Your Rights At Work campaign in the seat of Solomon.

Naomi’s other significant achievements include: being Secretary and then President of Unions NT; Vice President of the Industrial Relations Society of the NT; and the final ending of the long legal battle with the NT Government over the closure of the Northern Territory Government and Public Authorities Superannuation Scheme.

Naomi finishes with the CPSU on 12 December and is then taking a well deserved break to spend time with her family and to pursue further studies. CPSU wishes her all the best.

Naomi has been a fantastic asset to the CPSU in the NT. Tireless, hardworking and cheerful. You'll be missed greatly. Good luck.
