Centrelink proposes Illawarra job swap

7 July 2010, 11:47am

Illawarra Access and Processing staff cautiously welcomed a proposal from Area Sydney East management that could facilitate job swaps within the Illawarra area. Your union also met with management and Centrelink have committed to consulting with your union at every step in this process.

Job swap process so far

  • You will have one week to submit your expression of interest, once the EOI process is open
  • If you want to move you can submit preferences for your top three specific workplaces, and
  • You can specifically exclude one workplace where you do not want to work.
  • All access and processing workplaces in the Illawarra are included, and DSST in Wollongong may be expanded.

Your feedback in initial consultation

The key questions staff asked at information sessions:

  • What criteria will be used to decide who goes where?
  • What if more employees want to leave a team rather than enter it?
  • If I’m not happy when I move, can I come back?
  • What will be happening to APR in Dapto?

We agreed with Centrelink to call for EOIs first. The answers to your questions will depend on what you and your colleagues think is an acceptable process once there is a list of people who would like to move.

What happens next?

After the initial EOI process we will be meeting with Centrelink to discuss the next steps and asking for your feedback. For example, is it possible to do a simple job swap process or will Centrelink need to consider a selection criteria. If not everyone can move to their first preference, what is a suitable selection process?

We need workplace contacts to support the process

You are in the best position to influence how this process will work. If you do not already have a delegate in your area, we would like union members to nominate to represent the views of their colleagues to ensure a fair and transparent process.

How does consultation work?

A genuine consultation process starts when change is first considered. Your union should be involved in each step from the beginning at every level of the process. Consultation should:

  1. Discuss the reasons and need for change, including information, with you and your union.
  2. Involve you and your union in decision-making by allowing input on the change proposals.
  3. Take all your feedback into account and develop support on the proposed change.
  4. Once a decision is made, continue consultation with you and your union on the changes.

If you are not a member yet, now is the perfect time to join to make sure you have CPSU in your corner. To find out more on getting involved, please call organiser Angela Khodeir 02 8204 6911, or email angela.khodeir@cpsu.org.au
