Telstra job cuts a kick in the guts

22 August 2012, 4:27pm
Members from Telstra Moe, which was closed last year Members from Telstra Moe, which was closed last year

The CPSU knows staff have worked hard to make Telstra a productive and profitable business.

On 9 August, Telstra announced a net profit of 3.42 billion dollars.

Telstra are thanking staff by proposing hundreds of job cuts around the country, including in Melbourne and Sydney.

The closure of the consumer contact centres in Lismore and Townsville would leave around 250 staff out of work.

The closures would have a massive impact, on Telstra workers, on the local communities and, ultimately, Telstra customers.

Employment prospects are very limited in regional areas. Some of the families of these workers would have to look at relocating to find a job or face unemployment.

CPSU organisers are onsite to support members and help them campaign against the job cuts.

Messages of support mean a lot for staff who are facing losing their job.

I am a bit disappointed at how short sighted Telstra are being. I am concerned for the future working conditions of my children and their children. So shall you reap Telstra executives, keep offshoring jobs and eventually all of the Australian executives will no longer be needed as there will be a cheaper bunch of executives to hire overseas. See how you like those redundant apples. You really should ask your everyday share holder how they feel about you devaluing their shares by this lack of regional support.

i must say that last time they fired 200 staff (brisbane credit management) telstra told the country that it was due to customers liking the offshore reps! Then how is that 80-90% of the customer base i speak to say "BRING BACK THE CALL CENTRES"!!!

To those effected staff at Lismore & Townsville centres, my sincere support is with you. Hang in there your communities fight is not over yet!! I still can't believe that Telstra is still so set on reducing as much as they possible can until there is little left in Australia. The Telstra board should take a hard look at what they consider to be the whole NPS-Score & "BUZZ" around the company that it's not helping the moral of either customer or their staff to be advocates when these sort of decisions are made. In the short term it may seem like a economical idea, but in longer terms all it will mean the customers will suffer and eventually churn to another provider as all they want to see as the Telstra brand is be wholey Australian like it always been and workers here in Australia servicing them. It's another sad day for the workers of Telstra.

Show our support really? I am a shame that it has come to this but were any of you that is showing your support one of those that is losing their jobs, most probley not, I am one of those people and unless you know the real story as to what is going on then please don't comment. As for the union I am a shame to be for the 1st time in a union that helps the people that brake the rules and their contracts agreements. Just maybe you might need to look at your union people and see what they have done to help the people that work day after day and really get no help, not a happy person
