Help secure work in Medicare branches

30 October 2012, 12:14pm

Medicare branch staff have seen a series of reductions in the amount of work being done in branches, and the December 2012 deadline for branches completely phasing out telephony work is near.

Now is the time to take action. The CPSU is calling on all Medicare branch staff to join the union and get behind implementing a Medicare Jobs Plan, which will map out the future of work in Medicare branches.

What you said - 97% support union’s call for a Medicare Jobs Plan

The CPSU is calling on the Department to start negotiating a Medicare Jobs Plan for branch staff that will secure their employment and career paths. We asked Medicare branch staff for their views on how Service Delivery reforms have impacted on them.

Key results are:

  • 600 staff, or 40%, took the survey
  • 90% said service delivery changes threaten their job security
  • 79% said Medicare staff are being left behind and not benefiting from opportunities Service Delivery changes are giving other DHS staff
  • 97% said DHS has not clearly stated what the future of work for branch staff is, and
  • 97% said the Department should have a Medicare Jobs Plan jobs plan for Branch staff that guarantees future employment and quality jobs that includes access to opportunities for advancement to APS4.

Help shape the future of work at Medicare branches

Service Delivery reforms are changing the type of work done in Medicare branches. Cash handling is gone, online claiming is increasing and more branches are co-locating with Centrelink. Despite these big changes there is no clear plan for the future of branch staff’s jobs.

Help create some certainty for Medicare branch staff by joining the CPSU today and supporting the push for a Medicare Jobs Plan.
