Broad-banding for Calvary patient service employees

1 March 2008, 5:00am

A clause in your new ACT Health Clerical, Health Professional, Technical, Health Service Officers Union Collective Agreement 2007-2010 has made the process of broad-banding arrangements simpler and creates the opportunity for employees to have increased career progression.

This system can be implemented in areas with the agreement of Calvary and the CPSU.

What is broad-banding?

Broad-banding allows a position or group of positions to have the minimum levels and maximum levels in two different classifications (eg, an employee starts as an ASO2 and has the opportunity to progress to an ASO3 level during the life of their employment). This system also recognises the complexities of certain positions which evolve over time and properly recognise people once they have achieved a level of competency in their duties.

How will the system work at Calvary?

CPSU has been working with Calvary to implement a system which allows an ASO2 employee to move to an ASO3 level after 12 months of employment. The requirement of the employee is: - to have completed a log which shows they have achieved a level of competency in their position - this is done in conjunction with their manager - it is not a merit-based process like an interview but rather an employee showing they are competent in the required duties for their position - the development of broad-banding for ASO2 administrative positions at Calvary Hospital began with the positions of Ward Clerks. It is now in a stage where it can be made available to other patient service areas.

Who does this apply to?

This applies to all patient service employees including patients’ office, medical records, allied health and communications officers. If you are in one of these areas or another patient service offices please contact your CPSU organiser Paul Judge on 6220 9658 or paul.judge@cpsu.org.au.

CPSU is eager to make sure all eligible employees are included and the process is fair and equitable. This includes ensuring members are well informed about how it affects them. CPSU will be able to work with members to assist in this system operating in their area.
