AGD - strong representation needed to protect your rights at work
7 March 2008, 10:26am
Recently union representatives on the Workplace Relations Committee have been approached by a number of staff with concerns about a lack of appropriate consultative processes at Attorney Generals.
Your new Union Collective Agreement (UCA) has specific requirements in this
regard and members have questioned whether the consultative and change
management provisions have been applied. CPSU believes staff should be consulted
before decisions are made. For effective monitoring and enforcement of your UCA
you need strong representation from all areas in AGD.
A big thank you!
Most members would agree your current union and staff representatives on the
WRC have done a fantastic job in negotiating your new UCA. Now we need your help
to support them in monitoring and enforcing the new agreement.
Delegate elections
Delegates, deputy delegates and workplace contacts are needed from all areas
of Attorney Generals.
Delegates play a vital role by providing a direct link between your
workplace, your union and your union reps on the WRC. We are asking all members
at AGD to participate in electing delegates in your workplace.
Ideally, we need a delegate, a deputy delegate and workplace contacts in all
Divisions:
Civil Justice
Classifications, Human Rights & Copyright
Indigenous Justice & Legal Assistance
Legal Services & Personal Property Securities
Office of International Law
Territories and Native Title
Office of Legislative Drafting & Publishing
Security & Critical Infrastructure
Criminal Justice
International Crime Cooperation
Protective Security Coordination Centre
Emergency Management Australia.
Where these divisions are spread across more than one location it is
advisable to organise representation from each site. Information on the role of
a delegate and a nomination form are attached.
What does a delegate do?
Workplace delegates are the foundation of our union and their important work
includes
acting as the link between CPSU officials and organisers, and members
helping members resolve local issues and individual grievances
distributing union material
recruiting new members
Right now, the union is encouraging all members to think seriously about
nominations for the positions of workplace delegate and deputies in your
workplace. Under the union’s rules, every workplace is entitled to a delegate
and a deputy delegate, and there is scope for additional representatives. The
CPSU would especially like to urge women, Indigenous members, members with a
disability and members from non-English speaking backgrounds to nominate.
What experience is needed?
You don't need any experience to become a workplace delegate, just
enthusiasm. We provide training for delegates, and you will also receive regular
assistance and support from your CPSU organiser.
What do I need to do now?
Talk to other members in your division about who would make a good
workplace delegate.
Ask your proposed delegate to accept your nomination - this way you are
letting them know they would have your support in the role of workplace
delegate.
If you would like to be a delegate or deputy delegate you will need two
people to nominate you.
Nominating delegates and two members need to fill in the attached
nomination form and return it to Alison Sexton-Green at the CPSU by COB
Friday 14 March.
Not a member yet?
Sometimes the best delegates are not yet members.
