You spoke, we’re listening - NMA survey results

4 April 2008, 12:13pm

Thanks to all the National Museum of Australia staff who provided their valuable feedback via the CPSU bargaining survey.

Your feedback is now being collated into a draft bargaining claim that will form the basis of negotiations with management. The draft claim is almost completed and will soon be distributed to you for further comment and member endorsement.

What did we say?

Pay

  • 92 % support the CPSU pay claim of 5% pa
  • 100% agree wage rates need to keep up with the market.

Work/life balance

  • 83% do not support an increase in hours
  • 92% support 14 weeks paid maternity leave
  • 89% support 14 weeks paid adoption leave
  • 89% support access to unpaid parental leave until a child starts school
  • 89% support 6 weeks paid parental leave
  • 90% agree there should be support for the retention of mature aged employees.

Ensuring you are treated with respect

  • 23% of staff disagreed with the statement that your performance assessment is fair, transparent and consistent
  • It is of some concern that 19% of respondents think their access to training and development is difficult and inconsistent.
  • 83% support protecting redundancy provisions.

Making sure you are listened to

  • Again, while 75% agree they are genuinely consulted, a substantial 25% do not believe they are genuinely consulted
  • 94% agree you should have access to your union and be represented
  • 87% agree employee reps need training and facilities.

Protecting your terms and conditions

  • 80% support retained access to the AIRC
  • 89% support retaining conditions in the agreement instead of policy or guidelines
  • 95% support having genuine choice of employment instrument
  • 77% agree NMA should not terminate the next agreement unilaterally on its expiry.

What happens now?

Your union is has almost finalised your draft bargaining claim based on your feedback. This claim will soon be circulated for your comment and member endorsement. In the meantime, to facilitate the progress of your CA negotiations, your union representatives have begun without prejudice, preliminary discussions of the draft bargaining claim.

Information sessions

Our survey indicated strong support for information sessions that explain the bargaining process and the new bargaining environment. CPSU is working with elected staff representatives and management to set up a series of paid time meetings, across all staff groups, where this information will be provided.

Bargaining to win

NMA staff have clearly said you want a fair pay rise and an agreement that maintains and improves your employment conditions. Management will be under pressure from Government policy to fund a pay rise from existing budgets and identify productivity gains throughout NMA to meeting the increased 2% efficiency dividend. The only way to support fair pay and improved conditions is through majority union support. A majority of staff behind your union pushing our bargaining claim means better pay and conditions for you!

What do I have to do?

  • Watch out for your opportunity to attend a claim endorsement meeting
  • Watch our for your opportunity to endorse the bargaining claim
  • Attend one of the bargaining information sessions that will be scheduled after April 10
  • Join your union and encourage a co-worker to do so. You can join the CPSU securely online here
