Building a positive work environment

10 September 2008, 3:41pm
Every worker deserves dignity and respect from management... Every worker deserves dignity and respect from management...

Have you ever experienced or witnessed bullying, harassment or victimisation at work? Your union is supporting and representing a number of members at DEWHA who are in this situation and we are concerned there may be more.

Standing up for your rights

CPSU believes every worker deserves dignity and respect from management and co-workers and that there is no room for harassment, bullying and victimisation in the modern workplace. Your union wants to work with the Department to build a more positive work environment. We advocate an active approach to sort our problems. With this in mind, we are seeking your feedback and support for building a positive work environment free from harassment and bullying. Together we can make a difference.

Bullying can be many things

  • Personal insults and name calling
  • Sarcasm and ridicule
  • Constant negative criticism
  • Constant intrusive surveillance and monitoring
  • Freezing out, ignoring or excluding
  • Use of threats and instilling fear
  • Constantly undervaluing efforts
  • Setting impossible workloads
  • Not giving you all the information needed to help you do your job
  • Using formal performance and disciplinary procedures to intimidate
  • Restrictive and petty work rules
  • Use of one-on-one chats without notice
  • Applying leave guidelines inconsistently

What is a positive work environment?

The APSC outlines the essential elements of a respectful and courteous workplace: ‘Employees want to work in a place where:

  • they know what is expected of them
  • the workplace is safe and they are treated fairly
  • their skills and contribution are recognised and valued
  • training and development support career progression
  • they can work harmoniously with others.’

What do you think?

Your union is seeking feedback and support from all staff for a more positive work environment at DEWHA. Through the confidential survey below you can let us know if you support our values and goals, your thoughts on what issues need to be addressed, and importantly, what you can do to help.

What can you do?

  • Complete the survey on reverse and fax-back to 02 6220 9690 or complete the DEWHA Bullying Survey here.
  • Join CPSU to:
  • support our campaign for a positive work environment;
  • access expert industrial representation and support; and
  • gain other member benefits like discount home loans, insurance and banking, tax-deductibility of membership fees and free journey travel insurance
  • Know what to do if you feel bullied or harassed. Find out more here.
