Management wrote to the CPSU today saying that they are dealing with ‘approximately ten’ redundancies in Resources. In what appears to be a breach of the ABC Employment Agreement management appears to have already identified the actual positions marked for redundancy.

Our Agreement says that management are required to have discussions before
they proceed to the next stage of identifying individuals for redundancy. Before
they go down that path, they should be having a serious discussion about the
reasons why they intend to go ahead with redundancy. What we got instead was
management speak:
ABC Resources has been assessing its utilisation results and has
identified some areas of low or inconsistent demand, or where staff for
various reasons are not able to be fully utilised in particular skill
groups. Extract of letter to CPSU
Maybe the low or inconsistent demand has something to do with the failure of
management to support internal production and their preference for outsourcing.
Maybe it may have something to do with years of neglect that have seen
internal staff de-skilled through lack of access to more demanding production.
Redundancy is a lazy (and costly) management tool for dealing with the
problems. Re-skilling and re-building internal production is hard…but it is, and
should be ABC core business
We have called for an immediate meeting with management
We want to know:
what were the findings of the Resources Review that management claims
justify the cuts?
why management won’t release the resources Review
why can’t the staff be used to build new programs…why do the jobs have
to be cut?
what are the actual labour utilisation rates?...Is the TV Division
making effective use of existing staff?
why are they sacking staff when they continue to employ freelancers?
are they going to announce cuts in the TV Division?
