Thanks Peter. Great job, delegate!

26 September 2008, 11:56am
Peter Verdon has resigned from his CPSU Delegate role after 8 years of devoted services, thanks and farewell! Peter Verdon has resigned from his CPSU Delegate role after 8 years of devoted services, thanks and farewell!

After 8 years as CPSU delegate in the Department of the Senate, Mr Peter Verdon has resigned from the role.

A well respected Delegate

Peter is respected by management and general worker alike. His intelligent, considered approach to solving workplace issues and his genuine desire to help people made Peter an ideal union delegate. He will now concentrate on his Public Service career. What’s the secret to being a good delegate? “To listen!” Peter says. Good advice.

Replacement sought

Finding a replacement CPSU delegate for Peter will not be easy, but we will have to. If you think you would like to give it a go at representing CPSU in the Senate, please email andrew.smith@cpsu.org.au or ring Andrew on (02) 6220 9611. A full training will be provided.

The role of a CPSU delegate in the Senate

Typical work for a CPSU Senate delegate includes:

  • Supporting members who find themselves involved in a workplace issue
  • Being aware of what is happening in the department generally and identifying issues relevant for CPSU involvement
  • Representing members at the quarterly Workplace Consultative Committee
  • Liaising with CPSU organisers and CPSU member Services Centre about workplace issues that are more complex or involve a number of employees
  • Encouraging colleagues to join CPSU
  • Possibly being a union representative at the bargaining table (not till 2010!)

Effective Delegate

An effective delegate needs to want to make a difference and reflects the CPSU values in the role. CPSU believes every worker deserves:

  • Dignity and respect
  • A safe workplace
  • Decent pay and conditions
  • Rights at work
  • A balanced working life

If you are interested in becoming a CPSU Delegate in the Senate, or for more information please contact your CPSU Organiser Andrew Smith.
