The heart and soul of our union

Hundreds of CPSU delegates have jumped at the chance to represent their workplaces at a series of conferences in the coming month, writes CPSU National Secretary, Nadine Flood.

We will kick off the first of our conferences dedicated to delegates and activists in Townsville on 17 July. What a beautiful location for the start of a very important process.

Twelve other conferences will be held around the nation, ending in Canberra and Cairns on 14 August.

The delegates conferences are an ideal time to reflect on the important work workplace delegates do. CPSU delegates have significant workplace rights under the Australian Government Employment Bargaining Framework (AGEBF) which was introduced on 1 September 2009. The framework enshrines much of the CPSU Delegates' Rights Charter.

The arrangements:

  • recognise the legitimate role of union delegates to act on behalf of members
  • ensure their role will be respected and facilitated by the employer
  • give delegates access to union training during paid time
  • allow delegates to consult with members in work time and display union materials in the workplace
  • give delegates the right to consultation and access to relevant workplace information.

The CPSU thrives on democratic processes. Receiving collective opinions from delegates is essential to how we form a position to take to government. Each year we take their views to the CPSU’s peak decision-making forum, Governing Council. At the next GC meeting in Melbourne in September we will consider the delegates’ feedback from these conferences.

Vital issues to be discussed at this year’s regional conferences include:

  • Progress on the CPSU Agenda for Change
  • Providing support for delegates so we can build a stronger union
  • For APS delegates, finding a Better Way to Bargain.
