Give your career a lift with a CPSU grant

1 December 2011, 2:06pm

CPSU members can apply now for one of ten grants, of up to $2,500 each, to assist them in improving skills and qualifications.

What is the grant?

The CPSU Skills/ Qualifications Grants Program was introduced in 2010 to support members seeking to better their careers by undertaking tertiary study.

As CPSU National Secretary Nadine Flood said, "We know that many CPSU members take up study to improve their careers and that can sometimes be a juggling act with work. As a union, we wanted to find a way to provide practical support to our members who are balancing work and study."

The program was adopted by the CPSU Governing Council and run as a pilot in 2011. Through the pilot program, ten CPSU members received grants of up to $2,500 to assist with their studies in a wide range of fields including law, social work, science and business.

How has it helped?

Jo Ellis, who works for Red Bee Media, was a recipient of the grant in 2011 which she used to start a new course of study.

Jo said, "I used my scholarship to start a Graduate Diploma in Journalism. This study has helped me with my current position (a temporary role of writing audio descriptions for blind people).

"I plan to continue the Graduate Diploma in Journalism and also undertake a journalism internship to broaden my career opportunities. Receiving the CPSU scholarship has been a fantastic boost"

Trish Maluta, who works at the Australian Taxation Office, used her grant money to re-start her studies in psychology.

Trish explained, "the grant has meant that I can afford to do two units this year rather than just one which was my original plan.

"I am very humbled and grateful at this opportunity to continue my studies with the support of the CPSU".

Criteria for the CPSU Skills/Qualifications Grants Program

  1. Grants will be available to CPSU members undertaking undergraduate, post graduate or vocational study at a recognised tertiary institution.
  2. Participants will need to demonstrate the relevance of the proposed course of study to their career development in CPSU membership areas.
  3. CPSU grants are not available for study costs already funded by an employer under a study leave or similar scheme.
  4. Grants may be used to cover course fees, texts, or other study materials and costs.
  5. Payment will be made on production of invoices or receipts for expenditure.
  6. Nominations will be assessed by a panel consisting of one member of the EC and four members of the GC.
  7. The CPSU will call for nominations each November.

How to apply

Applications for 2012 grants have now closed. Details will be provided of how to apply in 2013.
