The impact of Queensland's public sector cuts

7 August 2012, 1:12pm

The ABC's 7.30 program recently examined the impact of public sector job cuts in Queensland.

The story looks at the human impact of sacking 20,000 Queensland public sector workers and the experiences of Lucille Riordan.

A worker's story

Single mum Lucille Riordan is the human face of the LNP’s indiscriminate public sector job cuts.

After five years working for the people of Queensland, she was told on a Thursday that she would have no job after Friday. Since then she’s been desperately seeking any job to pay her mortgage and keep a roof over her young family.

Sadly she's not alone as 20,000 other Queensland public sector workers also face the jobless queue in coming months.

But what makes it even harder for Lucille is that she says Campbell Newman told her personally before the election that public sector jobs like hers were safe.
