The Equal Pay Alliance is a powerful new network of women leaders from business, unions and Government who are determined to crack the 'glass ceiling' for Australian women, once and for all.
The Alliance includes representatives from the ACTU, the Australian Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW Australia), the Federal Discrimination Commissioner and the National Foundation of Australian Women (NFAW). The Alliance will be formally launched on 1st September 2009... Equal Pay Day.
Aims and objectives
The Alliance believes equal pay is not just a legal right, it is a moral fundamental in an equal society. Equal pay for women raises family income, which means more money to spend on food, housing, superannuation/savings and child care - all of society can benefit from pay equity. The Alliance is committed to acheiving:
Better regulation of flexible work arrangements for women and men with caring responsibilities and increased protection from discrimination on the grounds of family and carer responsibilities
Improved quality, accessible and affordable childcare including after school hours and vacation care
Improved equal employment opportunity practices in workplaces
Meaningful reporting by employers of equal pay and employment opportunities
Regular independent monitoring and analysis of progress in achieving gender equality, including progress towards achieving equal pay
A greater role for government agencies in auditing, promoting and implementing equal pay and employment opportunity programs in workplaces
Proper valuation and funding of wages and conditions for work traditionally carried out by women.
Why 1 September?
Equal Pay Day is being held on 1 September because that date signifies the point of the year that a woman must work up to to earn what a man would have made in the previous financial year. To find out more information about equal pay, click here
