You can request part-time work at any stage. Centrelink have to give real and
genuine consideration to your request and negotiate your hours with you. To say
no, they must have a good reason that is explained to you in writing.
Your part-time rights at work - employee initiated
You can apply for part-time work at any time.
Centrelink must negotiate your request to work part-time.
Following maternity leave you have the right to work part-time for up to two
years.
There is no maximum or minimum number of hours for part-time work.
Management must consider all requests and CANNOT unreasonably decline
part-time work.
In considering your request they must take into account:
your needs and preferences;
the service delivery requirements;
balancing the needs of other employees; and,
the impact on maintaining learning and development.
Your part-time agreement must be in writing, and should detail;
Your specified and regular hours and any specific arrangements,
The duration of the agreement.
Your part-time agreement cannot be varied without your agreement.
Management initiated part-time staff
Management may initiate part-time work by advertising for and recruiting
part-time staff.
Each employee must be given written advice confirming the working
arrangements including specified and regular hours.
Once employed, there is nothing to preclude a management initiated part-time
staff member from seeking to increase their hours. A separate selection exercise
should not be necessary if it is the same type of work. Full-time staff can also
apply for management initiated part-time positions.
