Sarah O'Rourke - passionate about community engagement...
Sarah O'Rourke is one of a number of CPSU members joining Australia's 'best and brightest' at the Rudd Government's Australia 20/20 summit in Canberra this weekend.
CPSU Governing Councillor Sarah O'Rourke from the Northern Territory Public Service is thrilled to be making the trip to Canberra and be part of the 20/20 summit.
"When I got the phone call telling me I'd been selected, I thought it was a joke. I actually had someone check the website for me," she said.
Sarah will participating the Australian Governance stream of the summit discussing way to improve meaningful engagement between government and the community.
"I'm passionate about community engagement and I'm keen to explore new and different ways to bring people together. I think everyone accepts that we can do things better.
"Sometimes, when it comes to public policy there's a lack of follow through that can lead to apathy and cynicism. Politicians make an announcement or even attend a community cabinet, then nothing much else happens and people wonder 'why bother?'" she said.
Sarah also believes that in a nation where voting is mandatory, there is a worrying education gap around the role of government.
"Australia would be an even better place if people knew more about their democratic rights and how government actually works," she said.
So is Sarah worried that despite the best intentions, the 20/20 summit might descend into a talkfest?
"It has crossed my mind, but it makes me more determined to have my say and make sure alternative voices are heard. I don't want to sit around listening to politicians talking for hours on end.
"I think that people need to check their egos at the door and make an effort to listen and participate in a debate of ideas for the greater good," she said.
Other CPSU attendees:
ABC Radio National Book Show presenter and CPSU member Ramona Koval is attending and will be arguing strongly in defence of the public broadcaster. CPSU National Secretary Stephen Jones will also be at the summit representing the interests of CPSU members and taking part in the debate on the future role of the public service.

I think the 2020 vision must include guarentees for workers' rights. Let us NEVER see anything like Workchoices again, and let's make sure that any last vestiges of Workchoices are killed and buried.
The 2020 vision must also include ways of ensuring that there are still jobs in Australia: "free trade" and "competiton" and old fashioned greed have already sent too many jobs off-shore.

Good to see that someone like Sarah has been invited on their merits and not just because she is the child of intelligent people. (Murdoch & Packer)
