Because of the nature of their work, many CPSU members are directly involved in finding solutions to the big challenges Australia faces.
These include global warming; health reform; skills; education; workplace relations; indigenous disadvantage; telecommunications and infrastructure.
The Rudd Government has outlined an ambitious agenda and appears committed to developing long-term policies to meet these challenges.
In this environment it is clear Australia needs a properly resourced public sector made up of skilled, educated, motivated, creative and well-paid workers, who are committed to long term outcomes.
Over the next few months CPSU members and activists will have the opportunity to shape a new long-term agenda for change for the union and the industries we cover.
While continuing to focus on the ‘core business' of improving pay and conditions, we want to explore with you options for tackling a range of longer term issues such as:
maintaining a skilled workforce in a tight labour market
managing the imminent baby-boomer exodus
protecting and promoting the value of the public sector
ensuring workers with caring responsibilities can balance their work and life
closing the pay gaps between public and private sector and between APS different agencies.
