Laboratory outsourcing at Geoscience Australia

The CPSU met with Geoscience Australia management who advised that a final decision has not yet been made on the future of its laboratories.

Management stated that a review has been conducted indicating that the laboratory facilities require extensive upgrading; and that a number of options including outsourcing and down-sizing are being actively considered. It advised that a decision is expected to be made in 2-3 months, and that the plan will be implemented over the next couple of years.

Management refused to rule out job cuts or outsourcing of important laboratory functions.

The CPSU put forward a number members’ questions from our recent meeting. Unfortunately management was unable to answer any of these questions at the time, and stated that it will provide further information once plans have been finalised.
