Last month CPSU National Secretary Nadine Flood wrote to Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, calling for the cap on public servant staff numbers to be removed in the upcoming federal budget, as it is driving an increased use of contractors and labour hire and so contributing to the loss of essential skills and capacity. You can read the letter here.
In a view completely at odds with the experience of staff and clients, the Finance Minister has said that the Government has “struck the right balance ” with its current mix of public servants and contracted staff. This is especially bizarre given the Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit continues to uncover damning examples across Commonwealth agencies of this Government’s addiction to inefficient arrangements using contractors, consultants and labour hire.
Today’s comments from the ABS (Contractors cost double compared to public servants: ABS) are the most recent example of just some the problems from this misguided policy.
