A last minute change to the Building Code 2016 by the Government means that Telstra will be able to seek an exemption on the basis that it’s principle business relates to an essential service; in this case, telecommunications.
This means that you are not required to vote on changes to your EA as the changes are no longer required.
The Australian Building and Construction Commissioner was mandating these variations in enterprise agreements across Australia as part of the Turnbull government’s attack on unions and workers. The main changes that Telstra would have been required to make related to removing the word ‘union’ from a number of clauses.
This is just one of the reasons why the CPSU and the union movement are talking about changing the rules.
