Union action delivers dollars at DoHA

25 June 2009, 9:01am

Following strong representation from your union and the efforts of CPSU members and supporters in the workplace, DoHA staff working in the National Incident Room have now secured extra penalty rates for all shifts worked during the swine flu crisis.

In response to the threat of Swine Flu, employees from all over DoHA moved quickly to staff a national hotline, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Initially staff where advised to keep, but not submit, time sheets to document the hours they were working. For over a month and despite repeated requests, no-one received any advice on how they would be compensated for the extra hours they were working, day and night, in these extraordinary circumstances.

CPSU first raised the concerns of union members at the National Staff Participation Forum (NSPF). When the Department failed to respond, CPSU encouraged affected staff to sign an open letter, on the CPSU’s website, calling on the Secretary to remedy the situation.

The pressure has paid off. A determination has now been issued. The rates below are in addition to the collective agreement entitlements and your union has received reports from some members that they have received payments in their last fortnightly pay.

The rates are as follows:

Before 18 May 2009

Shift APS 1-6 EL 1-2
6am-2pm 10% 10%
1:30pm-10pm 20% 20%
10pm-6am
4am-12pm
10pm-4am
30% 30%
Saturday As per CA 30%
Sunday/Public Holiday As per CA 75%

Post 18 May 2009

Shift APS 1-6 EL 1-2
5:30am-2pm 10% 10%
1:30pm-10pm 20% 20%
10pm-6am 30% 30%
Saturday As per CA 30%
Sunday/Public Holiday As per CA 75%

Some affected staff may still be unaware of this development and may require clarification about the process for the payments. If you are not receiving the correct additional payments, or have any other concerns, please email alison.sexton-green@cpsu.org.au
