CPSU wins new health and safety rules for remote travel

10 November 2009, 10:35am

Congratulations to CPSU members who campaigned for improved health and safety standards for remote travel.

The finalised “Remote Travel Standards Operating Protocols” address all health and safety concerns raised by union members in the workplace. For more information about the new protocols click here.

Background

The campaign began when CPSU members identified serious health and safety concerns. The reports detailed a wide range of problems from unsafe housing in the communities, to inadequate equipment and unsafe working conditions. Your union demanded urgent action from Centrelink, only to be told that the issues raised did not exist. This response from management exposed a disturbing absence of risk assessments, mechanisms for reporting and resolving OH&S issues, and a lack of health and safety guidelines aimed at mitigating risks in the field.

What we have achieved

Thanks to CPSU members making their concerns heard through participation in a series of collective activities, management eventually agreed to address staff concerns. Key achievements include:

  • Current risk assessment that identify all of health and safety issues employees may encounter when undertaking remote travel
  • “Remote Travel Standard Operating Protocols” that provide practical guidance to employees and team leaders in managing OH&S risks
  • Mechanisms for reporting and resolving health and safety issues through post trip reporting, and the relevant health and safety committees
  • A mechanism to monitor and review the protocols to address any new risks and to ensure that current protocols effectively minimise risks.

Getting results and positive outcomes

These new Remote Travel Health and Safety Protocols demonstrate what employees can achieve when they work together as CPSU members. Your support and membership makes all the difference
