AWM - there is a better way to bargain

17 March 2010, 1:04pm

Your CPSU team took your endorsed bargaining claim to management on Monday. Management said they are willing to consider union clauses for a number of key issues but their focus was on securing their pay offer. We think there is a better way to bargain and it begins with you.

Issues which got a positive response from management:

  • flexibility for those who choose to participate in discretionary work outside core hours through TOIL at time and half, no disadvantage to those who can’t participate, and that an employee will not suffer any disadvantage if they don’t .
  • consider how the requirements of the bargaining framework for delegates rights and their representatives will take shape in the agreement;- pending a draft from the unions.
  • providing ongoing data for issues such as staffing through the WRC
  • broaden the list of staff eligible to receive the restriction / on-call allowance
  • paying deemed leave out at the time the leave is deemed.
  • consider the issues of security staff and their need for personal protective equipment including sunglasses
  • improve family-friendly conditions such as lactation breaks for mothers

Pay offer – management’s narrow approach

Management’s offer is:

A) with 1% + 1% bonus with no impact on staff levels

OR

B) 1.5% with no impact on staff levels but with no bonus

They also said any offer above A and B would look like:

C) 2% pay increase with no bonus and with job losses estimated at 1.5 positions

D) 3% pay increase with no bonus and with job losses estimated at 4.5 positions

Management also advised that they will soon meet with the Council for discussions. Will they champion an acceptable pay rise for their staff at these discussions?

A better way to bargain

We think there is a better way to bargain that:

  1. keeps AWM competitive with the rest of the APS while offering up to a 3% pay rise
  2. makes the AWM a productive workplace without targeting jobs
  3. provides adequate staffing levels that continue to provide excellent service to the community

What can you do to help?

Get involved: let us know what you think and talk to colleagues about it.

Tell management: you support CPSU in seeking a competitive pay rise, protecting your job security and quality services for the community

Volunteer: Help to distribute union material in your section. Email Cheikh.kone@cpsu.org.au

Support: Join CPSU online or call 1300 137 636

We win fair pay increases and improved conditions in agencies with large and active memberships. Don’t give in - get involved and tell management what you think of their offer.
