Questacon - breakthrough on junior rates

17 March 2010, 2:56pm

Your union team is pleased to report that management has agreed to address the junior rates issue. This significant improvement comes after your overwhelming rejection of the previous offer and represents a huge step forward for the most disadvantaged of your co-workers.

Details, consultation and women’s super

Your union is now focussed on working through the details with management before we seek member endorsement to finalise the deal. This paves the way for the legislated all-staff consideration period and vote. We need details on how the transition away from junior rates will work. We also need the Department’s response to our claims for genuine consultation and protection for women’s super when on unpaid maternity leave.

Wins so far

  • Guaranteed 15.4% superannuation regardless of choice of fund
  • Healthy lifestyle reimbursement of up to $150
  • Improved support for parents - vacation child care subsidy increased to $22 per child per day and provision of car park for women in their third trimester
  • Early commencement to provide for maximum possible pay rise under Government policy which effectively caps pay rises according to agreement length. DEEWR has advised Questacon that the maximum offer can now be 3.4%.

The ones that got away

Securing funding to address junior rates is a significant move for Questacon in the current bargaining environment. Questacon did not, however, agree to most of our settlement proposal. There is no further action to address the financial disadvantage of Questacon staff, no joint classification review, no allowances for clothing or footwear, no improved travel allowances in the agreement (although some are currently under review), and no maintenance of temporary assignment of duties or eyesight subsidy entitlements.

CPSU continuing push for a better way to bargain in the APS

Your support and involvement has helped deliver a better result for the most financially disadvantaged of Questacon employees. We now have an opportunity to secure these gains while continuing work to address these unfair gaps in APS pay, conditions and classifications after 30 June 2011. Our Governing Council is meeting in Canberra this week to progress this. All Questacon employees are encouraged to support a better way to bargain to help win further gains.

Membership makes a difference

If you haven’t already, join your union! By being union members you help provide the power and resources we need to win a decent outcome for you and your colleagues. Membership fees are tax-deductible and tiered to salary so the less you earn, the less you pay i.e. casuals earning less than $10,000 can join for $3.90 a fortnight. Find out more and join online at www.cpsu.org.au. Technical and trades employees (Fyshwick workshop) are encouraged to join the AMWU.
