CPSU wins better AWM pay

30 April 2010, 9:19am

Thanks to your feedback in our snap poll, where almost 90% of you supported a 3% pay rise, CPSU has secured that pay offer of 3% - double what was previously on the table.

We are now awaiting management’s response on Christmas operations and will soon need your endorsement to recommend the deal. All staff are invited to a meeting today to find out more and to have your say. Management has agreed that you can attend on paid time.

What did we achieve?

  • An improved pay offer from 1.5% to 3%
  • Flexibility for those who choose to participate in discretionary work outside core hours through TOIL at time and half, no disadvantage to those who can’t participate, and that an employee will not suffer any disadvantage if they don’t participate.
  • Each union will have a representational rights in the WRC
  • Improved delegates rights and their representatives rights in the enterprise agreement;
  • Broaden the list of staff eligible to receive the restriction / on-call allowance to 30 minutes where warranted
  • Improve family-friendly conditions including finding suitable locations for staff who need lactation breaks / breastfeeding facilities
  • Paying deemed leave out at the time the leave is deemed.
  • Protection and improvement of existing conditions of employment through comprehensively expressing them in the collective agreement
  • CPSU also supported the push for protective equipment for Security staff including sunglasses
  • A Christmas shutdown proposal is being considered by management

The ones that got away

While there are many positives in the new agreement, there is work to be done in the future before you achieve the same standards as other APS employees. AWM did not agree to:

  • Standardising ongoing employment
  • Protecting women’s super contributions to be paid during periods of unpaid maternity leave
  • Increase to maternity leave.

There is a better way to bargain

CPSU is campaigning to close APS pay gaps by raising the standards for all employees, establish a set of core conditions and for genuine negotiations with Government on core issues currently determined by Government alone i.e. the effective 3% wage cap, no backdating pay rises, no enhancements of redundancy provisions, etc. For more information and details click here.

What happens now?

  1. All staff paid time meetings this Friday at 9am in the Theatre
  2. EA finalisation. This includes:
    • DEEWR assessment and Ministerial approval
    • All staff access period for 7 days followed by an all staff vote which will be held over 5 working days
    • Lodgement with Fair Work Australia.
  3. Your agreement takes effect 7 days following Fair Work Australia approval

What do I need to do?

  • Participate in the upcoming all staff meeting on Friday 30 April at 9am in the Theatre.
  • Join your union at our secure website or call 1300 137 636.
  • Talk to your co-workers about the importance of supporting their union
