New Geoscience Australia pay point scheme set to begin

28 May 2010, 11:25am

One of the key wins in the last agreement negotiation was a new pay point scheme to give Geoscience Australia employees APS standard increment advancement. The new scheme will be in place soon, and there are a few things you’ll need to do to make sure you benefit from this significant win.

Background - Why it needed fixing

Under previous agreements, only about a quarter of employees advanced a pay point each year, and only about a third of employees sat at the top of their range. This was vastly different from the rest of the APS where only those ineligible or underperforming didn’t advance and about two thirds sat at the top of range. As a consequence, GA employees were paid significantly less than other agencies.

Well organised action yielded big win

Following strong employee support, your unions were able to win a new scheme in your current agreement. The new scheme kicks in this year.

Accessing your new pay point advancement scheme The new scheme is intended to ensure a majority of eligible staff receive a pay point based on fully effective performance ratings on their IWP. You need to do two things:

  • Make sure you have a current IWP and finalised by the end of June.
  • We recommend you attend one of management’s information sessions on the new scheme and ask them any questions you may have. Supervisors are especially encouraged to attend.

Is it working? Let us know

Monitoring transition to the new scheme is a critical issue for CPSU members in GA. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments or concerns about the transition to the new pay point scheme. Talk to your delegate or email bill.irvine@cpsu.org.au.

Members are reminded you do have someone in your corner – if you need further advice or support talk to your delegate or call the Member Service Centre on 1300 137 636.

Membership matters

By being union members you help provide the power and resources we need to win a decent outcome for you and your colleagues. You’ll also be eligible for member benefits like free journey cover insurance; expert advice and support; and discount shopping, travel, banking and movies. Membership fees are tax-deductible and tiered to salary. You can join online.
