CPSU supports early conclusion of inquiry into the Same-Sex Relationship Bill

8 July 2008, 12:44pm

A letter from CPSU to Senator Trish Crossin, Chair of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee.

Dear Senator,

Early conclusion of inquiry into the Same-Sex Relationship (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws – Superannuation) Bill 2008 and vote by the Senate

The CPSU has strongly supported the removal of all forms of discrimination on the basis of sexuality in Commonwealth legislation. In our view the Bill that is currently subject to an enquiry by the Committee is an important step forward and we support it.

We request that the Committee conclude its work and report on the Bill so that the Bill can be voted on during the current sitting.

We are concerned that a delay in the commencement of the legislation may lead to concerns for those affected by the legislation and creates the possibility of ongoing disadvantage for more retired workers.

Yours sincerely

Stephen Jones
National Secretary
